Getting Involved
Parent Association | School Leadership Team | Title I PAC | C-30 | Chaperones | Parent Volunteers | Learning Leaders
On the high school level, many parents are not sure how their involvement could benefit the school and their child. Below you will find a list of different ways that you may get involved at DY Prep and make a difference. If you are interested in getting more information on any of the positions listed below, please contact the Parent Coordinator, Ms. Martoral, at (718) 410-4242 or bmartoral@dyprep.org.
Parent Leaders
Parent Associations (PA's)
Parent Associations are the main way for parents to get involved in their children's schools. Parent Associations are school-based organizations open to all parents, foster parents, and legally appointed guardians of children attending a New York City public school. The PA should be representative of the parents within the school. This includes parents of special educations students and English language learners, as well as students who are eligible for Title I, gifted and talented services, and magnet programs.
The executive board for the PA must consist of a President, Secretary and Treasurer. However, there are several committees that should be established which would need parents that do not have the aforementioned positions.
School Leadership Team (SLT)
School Leadership Teams are school-based organizations composed of an equal number of parents and staff. They meet at least once a month, and determine the structure for school-based planning and shared decision-making. In our school, our goal is to have at least five (5) parents on the team.
Title I Parent Advisory Council (PAC)
Title I is the largest federal aid program for elementary schools, middle schools and high schools. Schools that are receiving Title I funding must have an advisory committee or council that represents parents of participating Title I children. PACs represent these parents. The goal of Title I PACs is to ensure the involvement of Title I parents in school life. Title I committees and councils must be consulted regarding the use of Title I funds in the school, and must be involved in the development of the school's Title I Parent Involvement Policy and Parent School Compact.
C-30
The C-30 is a Chancellor's Regulation that sets forth procedures to be followed in the selection, assignment and appointment of principals and assistant principals. Four to seven parents are selected to be a part of this team that is intended to ensure that the supervisory selection process is equitable and based on principles or merit and fitness.
School Presence
Chaperones
Chaperones are parents that assist the school in supervising trips, special events, etc. Chaperones are extremely important to our school since they allow more teachers to remain in the school to teach, instead of attending trips. In addition, chaperones have the unique opportunity of spending quality time with his/her child on a social level and at no cost to them.
Parent Volunteers
Parent Volunteers are exactly that -- parents that volunteer at the school for various reasons. Depending on your interest, parents can volunteer their time to assist the parent coordinator with phone calls and/or mailings to parents. In addition, parent volunteers can assist with the set up special events (ex. dances, assemblies, etc.) as well as writing for the parent newsletter (for an example of the newsletter, please go to the Parent Resources page).
Learning Leaders
Learning leaders are parents that have completed a three session training in order to be certified to volunteer at the school. The training allows parents that are certified to work directly with teachers in the classroom. This is a great opportunity for parents who may be considering or have had some experience in the educational field.
