Arts Majors
At the end of their 10th grade year, students audition to major in one of five arts disciplines: Visual Art, Creative Writing, Media Studies, Dance or Theatre. Students will have their arts major for their 11th and 12th grade years. As an art major, students can expect to take a 90-minute studio class and 45-minute theory class every semester until they graduate. Arts Majors will mount exhibits of their work, participate in productions and shows, present a portfolio of their work and write a research paper on artists of their choice. Field trips and visiting artists are essential parts of the arts majors experiences. Each major partners with an outside organization to provide students with exposure to professional artists and hands-on art experiences. Our current partners include Labyrinth Theatre, Pregones Theatre, The Bronx Museum of Art, PEN, and EVC.
Creative Writing Major
The Creative Writing Major will encourage students to take their creative writing skills one step further in searching for specific voices within themselves. The Theory/History class will explore the wide range of voices throughout literary history and how those voices have developed to create such themes as self-identity, freedom of expression, spirituality, and kinship. Students will develop their own voices through experimentation and collaboration in Studio class while working with such genres as poetry, short fiction, plays, and memoirs. They will be challenged to self-exploration of their own voice and new voices through a wide variety of in-depth writing projects.
Dance Major
The dance major program at DY Prep is designed to give those students who have an invested interest in dance an opportunity to engage in all aspects of dance as an art form. The class is comprised of a theory and practical components. Students learn about dance theory and history and incorporate learned concepts into developing dance technique. Students are also exposed to dance in their community and work with guest artists. All students contribute to the collaborative choreographic process and work on developing unique performance aesthetic
Theatre Major
Starting with idea that acting is believing, the first semester of the Theatre Arts Major exercises both the inside and the outside of the student/actor; his imagination and internal life, his voice and body, his ability to create believable situations on the spot. Through constant practice, feedback and theory, the students look for answers to questions such as: What is truth onstage and how does it impact an audience? What makes a performer interesting to watch? What tools can I develop to enhance my performance abilities?
Visual Art Major
DY Prep Visual Art majors are forging a new path to mastery of art studio skills and scholarship in Art History and Visual Culture. Museum trips and visiting artists nourish the creative minds of our young artists. The after school art program allows students to think outside the box and spread their artistic wings. Small class size promotes an atmosphere of community, where young artists are active participants shaping their own future. Visual Art Majors emphasize the dream all young artists embody - that their accomplishments exceed their own expectations.
