Artistry

The ability to consciously use the skill of creative imagination to achieve a goal

Fluency in the arts will empower youth with the ability to understand and impact the world around them by developing essential critical thinking, creative problem solving and communication skills. The arts programming at DY Prep will also serve as an excellent foundation for arts-based and other compelling careers.

As artists, DY Prep students will:

  • Participate in arts electives
  • Declare and complete an arts major
  • Forge connections between their arts studies, coursework across disciplines and the world around them

Professional teaching artists who have been trained by DreamYard to integrate the arts into the fabric of learning communities are members of the DY Prep core faculty. All students will produce works to be experienced by audiences either in formal or informal sharings, portfolio reviews or publications. Within our arts programming, students have leadership opportunities including stage managing and directing productions, curating visual art exhibitions and serving a number of roles in the school arts magazine. At DY Prep, the arts are used not only as a means to explore one's individuality and voice, but also as a means to apply knowledge.

Behavioral expectations of our artists:

  • We confidently articulate our creative processes and concepts when asked
  • We develop our artistic voices to communicate with and move others
  • We share our artistry with others in both formal and informal settings
  • We use the arts as a tool to have a positive impact on our community
